Stewardship is Our Business

It’s not a trend or a boastful claim.  Stewardship is a culture of responsibility that permeates every aspect of Carmen Creek Gourmet Bison. We’re food producers and our business entails a stated commitment to your safety and trust in products that are created with integrity, without additives, hormones, antibiotics or growth stimulants.

Ethical Care is the Rancher’s Creed

To Carmen Creek ranchers, ethical animal care is more than a protocol.  It’s a creed intuitive to those who love and respect animals.

When it comes to bison, Mother Nature is the ultimate model of good animal care practice.

Carmen Creek bison grow naturally on three large, open prairie ranches in Canada and the Midwest.  All three ranches follow consistent ethical animal care, feeding regimes and environmental stewardship protocols.

Our animals are raised on a Natural Feed Choice Program. This means, Carmen Creek bison are given free choice of whole grains and free range grazing on natural prairie grass along with unlimited access to pure fresh water.  Remarkably bison, unlike cattle, will naturally select what they wish to eat, and they never consume more than their bodies require. At about 26 months they will reach their finished weight without excess fat.

Calves nurse with their mothers until a natural weaning period at about one year of age.

As there is no need to force bison to a finished weight, animals are not kept in congested feedlots, which can reduce animal stress and, limit potential for exposure to bacterial contamination.

Bison meat is very lean and tender with a mild, slightly sweet taste profile. It is never gamey or strong tasting.    Because feed does not contain additives, hormones, stimulants, or animal byproducts, the resulting meat is pure, as nature intended.

The wellbeing of our animals is a responsibility we’re privileged to have.

Trust our Label

A food label is a statement of authenticity – an ambassador of integrity earned only by full and complete compliance to federal government food standards in the country where the products are produced.

An approved food label is tough to get and rightly so because it is sanction that contents meet meticulous requirements for safety, integrity and quality. Every single word on an American or Canadian food label is intentional and supported by clear and specific definitions. It is illegal to make false claims.

So, when you read 100% PURE, NO GROWTH HORMONES, STIMULANTS OR ANTIBIOTICS on Carmen Creek Gourmet Bison packages, rest assured these are hard earned, credible statements supported by scientific research and analysis.

Also, check our labels for government stamps that indicate Carmen Creek Gourmet Bison products have been processed in government inspected facilities that meet rigorous standards for impeccable food safety and cleanliness.

We believe food safety and integrity is stewardship and so do our partners in food processing, retail and foodservice distribution.  Your peace of mind should never be taken for granted.

Leading Best Practices

Stewardship is a dynamic concept, one that needs to consistently evolve and improve.  Sustainable industries know this and work hard to create best practices with checks and balances to ensure continuous improvement through compliance and performance.

The North American bison industry is no exception. While the majestic bison has been roaming the plains for centuries, as a food industry sector we’re relatively young, but committed to grow ethically and responsibly.

Carmen Creek Gourmet Bison is honored to participate in the development of a North American bison industry initiative to articulate and champion best practices for animal care, environmental stewardship and food product integrity.

Raising the bar makes everyone better.
